Our History
It was in Minas Gerais when the first enterprise to produce iron in Brazil emerged (still on an artisanal basis). In Caeté, Forjas Catalãs, where there were large deposits of ore.
Its implementation was led by the bold entrepreneur Jean Antoine F. de Monlevade, in 1827. In 1911, diplomatic ties between Luxembourg and Brazil were officially reestablished.
From the 1920s onwards, in the south-central region of Minas Gerais, in the iron quadrangle, some Luxembourgish families settled, mainly in the municipality of João Monlevade, where they formed a colony.
The first integrated plant in South America, with steel as its final product, Cia. Belgo-Mineira, was founded in 1925. This company resulted from the association of the Belgian-Luxembourg consortium ARBED and Cia. Siderúrgica Mineira, which produced iron using Catalan forge system. In 1937, Belgo-Mineira started a second plant, which was also integrated and used charcoal as a reducer.
It is worth highlighting that this company was a pioneer in reforestation programs, using different species of eucalyptus, whose objective was to meet the demand for charcoal in blast furnaces.
